Breastfeeding is a full time job! You could be breastfeeding your newborn for eight hours a
day…or more!
One simple way to make breastfeeding easier is to have a basket handy with all the
essentials you may need during a feeding session. This can be especially helpful during
those late-night breastfeeds when you are too tired to think straight. Some items to include in
your basket are:
1. Water: You’ll get super thirsty, so be sure to have a bottle of water nearby at all times.
2. Snacks: When you’re breastfeeding you’ll need an extra 500 calories. You can get
hungry, so having some healthy snacks on hand can help keep your energy levels up.
3. Breast pads: Leaking is a common occurrence for new mums, so having some breast
pads handy.
4. Burp cloth: Babies often vomit after feeding, so having a burp cloth nearby can save you
from having to change your clothes multiple times a day. You’ll already have sooooo much
washing!
5. Phone charger: You may find yourself spending a lot of time breastfeeding, so having your
phone charged and nearby can help keep you entertained during those long feeding
sessions.
6. Breast pump: If you are planning on expressing breast milk, having your breast pump
nearby can save you time and energy when it comes time to pump.
7. Night light: if you haven’t developed night vision (which really comes in handy with a
newborn) a night light will be a great addition to your breastfeeding basket
8. Hand cream: you won’t believe how many times a day you wash your hands or use hand
sanitiser. Pamper your hands a little during the downtime.
In addition to these essentials, there are a few other suggestions to make breastfeeding
easier for new mums. Make sure you have a comfortable chair or breastfeeding pillow to
support both you and your baby during feedings.
Remember, breastfeeding is a learning process for both you and your baby, reach out if
you’re needing help or support.
